RETINAL DISEASE MANAGEMENT

The common diseases that the doctor sees and manages include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal vein and artery occlusion, occlusion. There are also numerous patients within the practice that are treated for inflammatory diseases of the eye, and complications of other intraocular surgery.

We see patients with central serous retinopathy, preretinal membranes affecting vision, and macular hole formation. Dr. Goldman has extensive experience in the surgical management of many types of vitreoretinal disease like detachment of the retina. Various techniques for retinal reattachment can be done such as pneumatic retinopexy where the detachment is treated with a procedure done right in the office. Scleral buckling is the more traditional procedure which is done in the operating room for selected cases. Vitrectomy is also sometimes done for retinal reattachment, and is more frequently used to correct bleeding within the vitreous cavity or scar tissue formation on the surface of the retina. Operating room procedures are usually performed at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

One of the unique features that distinguishes The Retina Center is the emphasis placed on patient education. We spend a great deal of time explaining all aspects of diagnosis and management to the patient. An example of some of these explanations is available on video that you can see. There are discussions about diabetic retinopathy, preretinal membrane formation, retinal tears, posterior vitreous detachment, and macular degeneration.
